Shopping online is probably the easiest way to find the costumes you need for you and your kids. From Harry Potter costumes to Stars Wars themes and even to sexy adult costume ideas, you can find a much better selection at much better prices by looking on the internet. And if time has gotten away from you and it is the last possible moment, you can always get expedited shipping!

Of course, there is much more to the traditions of Halloween than letting your kids loose in the neighborhood to beg for candy. Our modern Halloween celebration originated in the ancient Celtic observation of harvest season’s final days. Along with other customs, these early British observed the holiday by killing livestock in preparation for the long winter. They understood that the veil that stands between the world of the dead and the world of the living was lifted during this time, and therefore the dead were free to cause trouble during the harvest by damaging crops and causing disease.

The wearing of costumes began then as they wore disguises in order to appease or put off the spirits of the dead. The custom of carving faces to ward off evil spirits started in Europe and the British Isles. Symbols of the departed were carved from rutabagas and turnips. Most jack-o-lanterns in North America are carved from pumpkins, which are large and easy to work with.

As happened with many pagan holidays, the Church moved one of its holidays to coincide with the pagan Halloween observance. All Saints’ Day was moved from May to the first day of November for this purpose. The modern observance of Halloween has been largely separated from its pagan and early Christian roots, and is now treated by most people as a good excuse for a party and for their kids to wander the neighborhood in search of candy.

Holiday themed costumes and party supplies have grown to be a major industry. It is estimated that the average American spends over thirty five dollars every year on Halloween costumes, candy and party supplies. If you have already found the perfect costumes for your family this year, shop online in November for next year’s celebration. An excellent site to browse for that perfect outfit is the Web Costume Store.
